Counting is more than reciting "one, two, three". True number sense means understanding that the last number you say tells how many there are. These games build that idea naturally.
1. Snack counting
Put grapes or crackers on a plate and count together, touching each one. Then ask, "How many do you have?" Let them eat the answer.
2. Feed the hungry monster
Draw a face on a box or bag. Say "Feed him 4 balls!" and let your child drop exactly four in. Change the number each round.
3. Stair counting
Count every step as you go up and down. Try whispering on the way up and shouting on the way down.
4. Number hunt
Find numbers on doors, clocks, signs and books. Ask your child to point out a 3 or a 7.
5. Skip counting hops
Draw a line of chalk squares from 1 to 20. Hop on every second square while saying "2, 4, 6, 8". Later try counting by 5s and 10s.
6. Who is first?
Line up three toys and talk about ordinal numbers: first, second, third. "Who is second in the line?"
7. Say it two ways
Show a number like 11 and say it simply ("eleven") and as parts ("10 and 1 make eleven"). This quietly teaches place value.
Tips for success
- Always touch and move objects while counting.
- Keep numbers small first, then grow.
- Celebrate effort, not speed.
